Castaways Racing Safety Plan
Section 1 – Introduction
1.1 This Safety Plan is written to set standards for the safe operation of our RC boats. All members are expected to be familiar with these standards and adhere to them while participating in any club function.
1.2 As a NAMBA Associated Club, Castaways Boat Worx will adhere to all NAMBA safety guidelines.
1.3 This Safety Plan is divided into 5 Sections:
Section 1 – Introduction
Section 2 – General Safety
Section 3 – Lake Mira Mar
Section 4 – Everglades Pond
Section 5 – Fruitland Park Race Lake
Section 2 – General Safety
2.1 As a general rule, safety enforcement will be monitored by the person responsible for launch/retrieval of boats for the day.
2.1.1 At least 1 club member will be designated for launch/retrieval.
2.1.2 At the Race Lake, the responsibility will fall to the Race Director.
2.2 All drivers must wear closed toed shoes.
2.4 A fire extinguisher shall be readily available.
2.5 A first Aid Kit shall be readily available.
2.6 Consumption of, or intoxication of, or possession of, alcoholic beverages is strictly forbidden.
2.7 No boats will be run if there is a retrieval in process.
2.8 Crowd/spectator control
2.8.1 We have no official authority to tell anyone they cannot get too close to the boats or shoreline, we can only advise them of the danger, and advise them to stay safely away.
2.8.2 In the event the spectators do not heed our advice, we will stop all activity until they comply.
2.9 No boat with obvious damage will be run until deemed, by consensus, to be run worthy.
2.10 Once a boat is ready to be launched, the remote controller will be carried upside down by the battery compartment. The controller can be turned to driving position (finger on Trigger) once the boat has been launched.
2.11 All boats being carried to or from the water will be carried in such a way that the bow is facing forward.
2.12 Retrieval of disabled boats will only be done by a retrieval boat. Under NO circumstance will anyone enter the water (swim/wade) to retrieve a boat.
Section 3 – Lake Mira Mar
3.1 All drivers will keep their boats away from the Scale Boaters’ area.
3.2 Launch/retrieval personnel will wear calf high rubber boots.
Section 4 – Everglades
4.1 Launch/retrieval may be conducted by any club member. Members should help each other launch and retrieve their boats so there is more than one person on the dock in case of an accident.
4.2 No one will put any part of their body in the water to launch or retrieve a boat. A suitable launch/retrieval device will be available.
4.3 Anyone retrieving a boat that has gone ashore must be aware that alligators and snakes may be present.
4.4 No spectators will be allowed on the dock. The only exception is if a guest is driving a club boat under the direct supervision of a club member. If spectators do not leave the dock after being asked, we will stop all activity until they comply.
Section 5 – Fruitland Park Race Lake
5.1 Life preservers will be available and worn by, or within reach of, the occupants of the retrieval boat.
5.2 A Life Saving Ring with rope will be near the dock.
5.2.1 All drivers will be capable of tossing the Ring into the water.
5.3 Any boat not in the water by 30 seconds before the starting gun will not be allowed to launch.
5.4 Launch and retrieval from the dock will be done by the pit man for each driver.
5.5 No driver will be allowed to go backwards on the course due to a missed buoy.
5.6 Where possible, any boat unable to complete a race must enter the center of the track.
5.7 At the end of a race all boats must enter the center of the track before proceeding to the dock for retrieval.
5.8 During retrieval the driver of a retrieved boat must remain at dockside until the retrieval boat is docked.
5.9 In order to comply with the NAMBA Insurance policy, and to insure the safety of spectators, NO spectators will be allowed in a HOT PIT area.
5.9.1 A HOT PIT is defined as all space under the Pavilion while boats are being prepared for or actively racing.
5.10 To allow spectators to ‘get close to, and ask questions about’ our boats, they may enter the PIT (Pavilion) area during that time when the PIT is COLD
5.10.1 A COLD PIT is defined as any time before active race setup time, any time during intermission, or any time after the racing is concluded for the day.
5.11 An announcement will be made by the Race Director as to the HOT/COLD condition of the PIT area. It will be the responsibility of each driver/owner to remind spectators on whether the track is Hot or COLD.
